Lack of autumn cheer. SAD!

So we are well into fall and it’s practically Halloween. In the US I would already have eaten 30 pumpkins and squashes by now. I’m really excited to experience a Norwegian autumn and to drink some apple cider while wearing a sweater. I’m white, my genes force me to love fall this much.

I’m for suresies feeling homesick when I think about fall in Washington. Here I am, missing the Puyallup fair (#japaneseinternmentcamp #neverforget), giant piles of sodden fallen leaves, pumpkin spice, and the mass death of all insects. I won’t get to pick out a Halloween costume for my cat this year. And what about the apples? I come from a long line of apple tycoons (White Coyote Family Farms, name trademarked), so I’m really picky about my apples. It’s one of my more annoying qualities.

Coming to Norway has actually made me more aware of how unique American culture is. Why do we love fall so much? Why do we bring our dogs into malls? Why do we literally lose our minds when we get the opportunity to carve a gourd? Why do so many of us wear shorts during snowstorms? I’m not sure why we are the way that we are, but it probably has to do with hexes.

Autumn in Norway is a quieter affair. There are fall decorations, but they don’t take over entire stores. I haven’t seen any pumpkins, but hot chocolate is being sold everywhere. The leaves are hardly even yellow here, so get ready for a million more white girl autumn posts as fall really ramps up. I can’t wait to see how Norway does Halloween, and I’ve been practicing the sign of the cross to ward off any evil spirits!!! I’m super prepared.

Tell me what you think I should be for Halloween!!!
